“Don’t Bowl Him Into the Ground”: Stuart Broad Calls for Archer Rest and Atkinson Inclusion Ahead of 5th Test

Summary

Stuart Broad urges England to rest Jofra Archer and include Gus Atkinson in the bowling line-up ahead of the Oval Test for better workload management.

Jofra Archer keen to play in Ashes 2025

Former England seamer and Sky Sports broadcaster Stuart Broad has called for a change in England’s bowling line-up ahead of the Oval Test. Broad suggested that head coach Brendon McCullum rest Jofra Archer to manage his workload, while also endorsing the inclusion of Gus Atkinson in the playing XI.

Archer Shines on Return, But Workload Still a Concern

The hosts benefited greatly from Jofra Archer's injury recovery because he maintained his pace and contributed significantly to the Lord's Test, particularly in the second innings alongside his captain, Ben Stokes. With best figures of 3/73, Archer has taken 9 wickets in 4 innings thus far.

However, despite his effort, workload management remains a concern, much like Jasprit Bumrah. Archer was added to the squad ahead of the second Test but wasn’t picked initially, as he struggled with long spells in both the nets and county games.

Once deemed fit, he returned to the XI and worked hard, but signs of fatigue were evident in the final innings of the fourth Test.

Broad Urges Rest for Archer, Backs Atkinson for 5th Test Opportunity

Speaking on Sky Sports, Stuart Broad urged McCullum to rest Archer, warning that England can’t afford to lose him again with the Ashes on the horizon.

"We can't not have Archer for four years, bring him back and then bowl him into the ground and not see him for another four years," Broad said.

Broad also called for Gus Atkinson to be given a chance in the fifth Test, highlighting the need to test him at the highest level.

"I think Gus Atkinson has to play. I know he has not had any workload, but we need to see him. He hasn't been challenged against top-level opposition in Test cricket yet," he added.

He further noted that Brydon Carse didn’t look fully fit during the fourth Test and suggested that Atkinson could come in as a replacement if Archer is rested.

"Brydon Carse looked knackered in the fourth Test. He's been a trier and given absolutely everything, but it looks like his legs have gone. So Atkinson gets the nod."

To support the rotation strategy, England have added Jamie Overton to the squad as they prepare for the fifth and final Test at The Oval, starting Thursday.
